DAY TWO - BELGAUM TO BIJAPUR

IMMODIUM COUNT = 1.

As a producer, there are things you can plan for, and then there are the things you can’t. You can’t plan for one of your hosts almost driving the rickshaw into the hotel fountain on her first day at the handlebars. And you can’t plan for your other host brushing her teeth with tap-water "because nobody told me not to”.

But despite a shaky start to day two, we’ve made surprising progress and are now enjoying a cold Kingfisher at a lime green hotel in Bijapur.

The Indian crew were stars today, helping us navigate the two hundred kilometers across North Karnataka, crossing the holy Krishna River and threading through the madding crowds in towns like Lokapur, Jamkhandi and insane Bijapur itself. I’m sure the footage will speak for itself.

But the crew earn top marks for scoring permission for us to shoot in the spectacular Gol Gumbaz mausoleum. With one of the world’s largest domes and a whispering gallary (sic), it kept us entertained – and rolling tape – for a full hour.

So now, Katie’s trips to the bathroom are back to a regular one every couple of hours and Shelley is basking in the glory of squeezing an unprecedented 60kph out of a 150cc rickshaw.

And in the temporary production office in room 304 at the Madhuvan Hotel, we’re Google Earthing our way north into Maharashtra state and discussing the logistics of filming a convoy of rickshaws leaving Bijapur tomorrow – five other teams pulled into our hotel this evening shortly after we checked in.

India’s a big country… but it's a very small world.
